1940’s Fat Fendered Lead Sled Model Car

This 1940’s Fat Fendered Lead Sled Model Car was a model car project I decided to do one rainy Saturday. I painted it a grape purple, wired the flat head Ford V8, and did some custom taillights. The louvered hood came with the kit. This was a fun kit to build. I decided not to clear coat it very much, as I wanted it to have a bit more of a 50’s feel, with a bit less shine and gloss.

I built this mostly box stock with what came with the kit, however the graphics were not included with the kit. Those belong to a 68 Corvette Stingray, which I actually put on upside down. They were supposed to wrap around the front fenders of the Corvette, however I decided to run this this way, as they look better on this car upside down in my opinion. This fat fendered lead sled was one of my faster builds, but I thought it came out pretty cool.

If you have ever seen these cars in real life, they were very popular in the 1950s and 1960s. I have seen them at car shows, and they are usually similar to this. Back in the 50s, they were usually black, and had red, yellow, and orange graphics. These cars are still popular today at car shows.

I would love to have one of these for real, however I do not plan on buying one. I had a friend in college that had a 1951 Ford coupe. We used to ride around in that all the time, and we spent many afternoons tweaking it for maximum performance.
