1990 Pontiac Sunfire Concept Car
This 1990 Pontiac Sunfire Concept Car was an awesome looking car that turned into something totally different in later years. The Sunfire was actually made from 1995 until 2005, but the shape and style changed drastically.
This is the story of how the concept car, shown above, became the production car, shown below.
The Pontiac Sunfire was reliable, budget priced transportation for many people, and it became a regular site at High School and College campuses across the USA. I have to admit, however, that many people would have been more inclined to purchase the Sunfire if it looked like the 1990 concept car.
The 1990 Pontiac Sunfire Concept car was supposed to be called the Sufire 2+2, and was going to be offered in hardtop and convertible form. It featured a unique set of doors, with half doors in the back to allow access to the rear seats. This feature is now common on trucks and small cars, but at that time the concept was revolutionary. Once inside, the car featured all sorts of high tech and futuristic components, most of which are now standard or optional on most cars. Features such as Heads Up Display, 6 way power front seats with memory, steering wheel with radio and climate control buttons, and voice activated cellular phone were all included. In addition, there were no door handles, as they used a touchpad in the rear that activated the doors. The rear wheels were pushed back as far as possible to allow maximum interior and trunk room, as seen below. If you look at the photo above, the interior looks really cool, as an added bonus.
Underneath all the cool interior options were other features that were very advanced, as well. The car was powered by a front-wheel drive 16 valve, dual overhead cam, turbocharged, 2 liter 4 cylinder that made 190 horsepower. This was mated to a 5 speed manual transmission, which made for a nice little daily driver. It also featured 4 wheel independent suspension, antilock brakes, and a carbon fiber body. They wheels were 20 inch up front and 21 out back. This was unheard of in a time when 15 inch rims was the most common.
The 1990 Pontiac Sunfire Concept was a cool little car, with styling that eventually made it to production in the Pontiac Trans Am of the 1990s and early 2000s. There was no word on pricing for this concept, however it was probably pretty affordable. Pontiac was typically focused on affordable and reliable transportation. I wish they had made this Sunfire – I would have bought one.
